Did or do you feed your pets Purina Beneful? Well I did thinking it was a healthy food and now my dog is dead. Click on the link below to see the shocking and heart breaking stories of other pet owners who have used this horrible food, you really NEED to read this if you are currently purchasing it or purchased it in the past.

Even the folks at SNOPES.COM, the website that sorts out the myths or so called urban legends from the truth, states on their website to stop using the food until this issue is resolved.

The FDA has huge amount of info on their website regarding this horrible problem. I encourage everyone that has a pet to read as much of this recall info that you can, you will be shocked! You will see, right from the FDA's website, how little they, the FDA, regulates what is put into pet food and worse yet how manufacturers are putting ingredients in in pet foods that they are NOT listing on the ingredient labels. Here is an actual posting on the FDA's website and it is scary!! I am SO thankful that Life's Abundance doesn't use any of these products in any of their pet foods.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- April 27, 2007 -- Blue Buffalo Company, Ltd, Wilton, CT, is initiating a nationwide recall of all canned dog foods sold under its "Blue" dog food brand, all canned cat food sold under its "Blue Spa Select" cat food brand, and all dog treats sold under its "Blue" dog food brand. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning that the FDA has confirmed the presence of melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, in rice protein concentrate used by the contract manufacturer in the production of some of these products.

It should be noted the "Blue" canned dog and cat food products were not formulated or labeled to contain rice protein concentrate, and that the manufacturer, American Nutrition, Inc. added the rice protein concentrate to these products without Blue Buffalo Company's knowledge or consent. For this reason, Blue Buffalo Company is concerned that it can not have any faith in the integrity, or the accuracy of the ingredient labels of any of its products manufactured by American Nutrition. Therefore Blue Buffalo is withdrawing all products manufactured by American Nutrition, including products that American Nutrition claims do not contain rice protein. The FDA investigation into the inclusion of the rice protein by American Nutrition in Blue Buffalo's products is ongoing.

Consumers who have any of the "Blue" can dog foods, "Blue Spa Select" can cat foods, or "Blue" dog treats that are being recalled should stop using the products immediately, and return any unused or partially used products to the retailer where they were purchased, for a full refund.

Blue Buffalo has not received any reports of pet illness from any of the recalled products, but consumers are advised to speak with their veterinarian about any concerns for their pet's health.

As many of you already know, a new wave of recalls has been announced in the last 24 hours. Evidence suggesting that a shipment of the ingredient “Rice Protein Concentrate” contained melamine has come to light. Natural Balance, Royal Canin and Blue Buffalo have all announced recalls of their products containing this ingredient.

We have had several inquiries regarding our foods, since Life’s Abundance contains “whole brown rice”. Some consumers are confused, as the newly recalled Natural Balance foods include “brown rice” in their names. However, the contaminated ingredient is not brown rice; instead, it is “Rice Protein Concentrate”. None of our products include this ingredient.

Additionally, it is believed that this contaminated ingredient, like the wheat gluten involved in prior recalls, was imported from China. We use only human-quality ingredients from U.S. sources in our foods. There is no chance that this ingredient came into contact with any of our products.

We are fully confident that our foods, as well as all of our products, are completely safe. All of the products covered in the recalls of recent weeks included either wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate (and possibly corn gluten) in their formulas. We consider these ingredients to be unnecessary fillers, and as you know, we do not use fillers in any of our foods.

We continue to maintain very strict quality control measures in the manufacture of all of our foods, treats, care products and supplements. As we have noted previously, we devote a great deal of energy into using only the best vendors in the market, so that only the highest quality ingredients are included in our products.

By now, you are probably familiar with the extensive national recall of many brands of pet foods. Sadly, several dogs and cats have been sickened, and a few have died as a result of eating contaminated food. This is a tragic event, and our hearts go out to the families who are dealing with the heartache of the situation.

We want to reassure you that NONE of Healthy PetNet’s products are affected by this recall. At present, authorities believe the illnesses to be caused by contaminated wheat gluten and NONE of Healthy PetNet’s products include wheat gluten or wheat products of any kind.

Feeding a very high quality food is the best thing you can do for your dog or cat’s health. Please note that brands like Iams, Eukanuba, and Science Diet - which were all affected by the recall - are NOT healthy or natural foods. You should look for a meat-based food with no grains (for cats) or whole grains (for dogs), but without grain by-products such as wheat gluten or corn gluten. Grain by-products are inexpensive fillers and inferior sources of nutrition. They may make the food less expensive, but in the case of pet foods, you truly get what you pay for. You can find out if the food you have fed your dog or cat was part of the recall by visiting www.menufoods.com/recall. The science Diet list can be found on their web site located here www.hillspet.com/menu_foods/Menu_Foods_en_US.htm. Contaminated wheat gluten is currently the top suspect in the recall.

What is wheat gluten you ask?

Wheat Gluten is sometimes used in lower quality moist pet foods (cans & pouches) as an inexpensive protein source and gravy thickener. If you have ever ventured down the aisle of the grocery store where the meat substitutes are sold, then you may have seen Seitan in the refrigerated section – this is wheat gluten. It has a texture similar to cooked chicken meat. It is NOT a good source of protein for dogs and cats. Dogs and cats are carnivores and utilize proteins from animal sources much more efficiently than grain sources. Cats, especially, do not digest grains well. The digestion of grains creates more waste products for the animal’s system to process than it is naturally accustomed to, placing a constant stress on the organ systems.

The tainted pet foods are causing kidney failure in dogs and cats. Signs of kidney failure include:

  • Increased water consumption
  • Increased urination
  • Nausea & vomiting
  • Weight loss
  • Constipation
  • Lethargy / low energy
  • Loss of appetite

Kidney (Renal) Failure: The kidneys function is to filter out and excrete toxins from the body through the urine. One of the first signs of kidney failure is an increase in thirst and urination. This is why: A healthy kidney can concentrate toxins into a smaller amount of liquid to be urinated away. When the kidneys are damaged and become less able to concentrate the urine, more fluid is used by the body. As the kidneys become less efficient and the disease progresses, other signs of kidney failure begin to emerge such as weight loss, nausea, vomiting, constipation, low energy / fatigue, and poor appetite.

Diagnosis: Most animals do not show signs of kidney failure until about 70% - 75% of kidney function has been lost. In order to diagnose kidney failure and determine the extent of the disease, a blood test and urinalysis is needed. Always contact your veterinarian promptly if your animal shows signs of illness.

If you have fed your dog or cat any of the recalled foods, it is wise to have them tested.
